We now know so much from the neuroscience in terms of our brains having the capacity for creativity only when in the wandering mode. And for that, we need leisure time. Thus creativity is always a question of politics and injustice. Love your post.

thanks for including me in this! it was great to get the perspectives from the others - and it's especially comforting to know that i'm not alone in filling my notes app with fragments of thoughts until stars align to bring ideas together.

i particularly love the notion of the process being about fermentation, it paints a beautiful picture of engaging and growing into creativity as time passes - things become more complex, intentional and rewarding with patience..which can be a struggle alongside the time constraints that get placed on creatives..

Slowness is a gift! I enjoyed reading your insights, as well as Adrian and Mariam's. Is this a sign to start The OC?

Nina Vincent ˚ ༘ ೀ⋆。˚'s avatar

Yes!! and yes to the OC its so comforting.

“The other day as I was trying to decompress and watch The OC” our alignment is uncanny

I absolutely love your line “instead of measuring your productivity, measure your creativity.” I’m often guilty of judging myself for not being productive enough, but the best things never happen by rushing

The OC is the best

This is a very important and very painful topic for me, because I am one of those creative directors who fought for quality instead of the meaningless corporate pace and got laid off at the end. Art can and should be slow, but apparently most companies can’t afford that anymore.

I'm sorry this happened to you, Miriam. It's a sad truth, and I can only hope things change and also that whatever you're doing now gives you the space that you need.

I am currently suffering from the opposite of this problem. I work at an ad agency, and for the last 8 months, I have been working on a 15second social media clip for a client. You read that right: 8 months for a 15second insta video.

We presented more than 70 ideas that started off strong and got considerably worse as time went on. This is the perfect example of how time + chronic client indecisiveness/insecurity = shitty outcome.

I remember that the very first ideas (the ones put on paper just 24 hours after the briefing) were, without a doubt, superior to the ones that came later. Speed can be your friend sometimes. Too much slowness can erode the soul of a project.

8 months and 70 ideas later, it’s just really hard to care. This is an extreme case, though. I’ll admit that.

Wow that sounds testing- at that point its giving serious perfectionism there is definitely exceptions and a balance needed!
